My Drunk Kitchen

Let’s back up to last Friday, or at least I think it was then, but it might of been Thursday: I had gone into Piragis Northwoods Company‘s second floor bookstore.  I had noticed a book called My Drunk Kitchen: A Guide to Eating, Drinking, and Going with Your Gut by Hannah Hart. (Since then, I’ve of course gone back and bought it.)

Tonight while watching – by which I mean I was on my MacBook surfing the web while eating - Back to the Future part 2,” I decided that I should watch one of the episodes of Hart’s web series:

I do have to admit that I found the episode to be funny as hell.  I can see why Hart’s show has become a well known thing by those who watch cooking shows – if more cooking shows where as entertaining as Hart’s, I’d probably would watch more – and found her’s.

Although I have yet to watch any more episodes, I’d recommend checking out her channel.

Posting on Social Media: How Often Should You Do It

About 18 months ago or so, I attended the November Delegates conference of the Minnesota State University Student Association (MSUSA).  During the conference, I was able the Public Relations break out session lead by Jered Weber, who is the Director of Communications of MSUSA.

During the breakout session, Weber talked about how often you should post on Facebook – more specifically, Facebook Pages – and on Twitter.  According to Weber:

  • You should post 1 to 3 times per day and 5 to 10 times a week on your Facebook page
  • You should tweet regularly throughout the day.

Weber did disclose that there are several different theories on how often you should post.  But here’s the breakdown that I see:

  • If you have a Facebook Page, you should post attempt to post once a week, but no more then 10; unless you are a news source.
    • You should include a photo in your post, since they take up more space on people’s timelines; and if you can, post photos in which you can tag fans of your page so more people will see it.
  • With Twitter, tweet as regularly as you can.  After all, Twitter is meant in many ways to be a constant connect with your followers.
  • With Instagram, I’d say aim for two or three times week at least.
  • For YouTube, I’d go with one of the following depending on your purpose:
    • News account: daily, Monday through Friday or once a week
    • Personal Vlog: Once or twice a week
    • Tutorials: Once a week
  • Blog: At least once a week

Now, these aren’t fast and hard suggestions.  Ultimately, it all depends on why you’re using a particular social media site.  I have a friend who uses twitter to mainly follow web designers and retweet them.  And there are people who use blog hosting sites to create personal websites or websites for their businesses.

Taking Stock of Your Current Personal Brand

For those of you in the same boat as me in regards of working on your personal brand, the best way to start is by taking stock of your personal brand.  This, in many regards, is an easy thing to do.

1. Make a List of Your Hobbies & Interest

A good place to start is making a list of your hobbies and interest.  Are you interested in books?  How about video games?  Do you love to sing?  Do you have a passion for cooking?

What ever your hobbies and interest are, make a list of them.  There isn’t a magical number of how many interests you have to have for your personal brand.  If you only have two hobbies and five interests, then that’s fine.  But what you should do is be specific about them.

Lets say you’re interested in books.  Break that down even further.  On your list, list the genres you like or specific authors or specific books.

2.  Describe Yourself using Adjectives and Nouns

Spend a good five to ten minutes just brainstorming adjectives and nouns that describe who you are.  Your list could easily range from being a book worm to an athlete to being dramatic.

There’s no right or wrong adjectives and nouns to use to describe yourself.  But if you’re having a hard time coming up with a list, you can always ask your friends.  They might be able to list of adjectives that you didn’t even think of.

3. Make a list of brands you use

The brands you use are as much a part of your personal brand as anything else.  Think about things you use:

  • Do you use an iPhone or Samsun Galaxy s5
  • Do you use a Nikon camera or a Canon Camera
  • The type of laundry detergent you use
  • The type of deodorant you use
  • Your favorite place(s) to eat

Believe it or not, even the scents from hair products, deodorants and laundry detergents you use have an impact on your brand.  I have a friend who would always tell me that I smell like fresh laundry and this was due to my usage of Tide with Febreze.

Bringing it all together

The three lists you have made are your starting point for your personal brand.  The lists, especially the ones about the interests you have and the products you like to use, are things that you should be Facebooking about, tweeting about, YouTubing about and what ever else you do with social media.

This of course doesn’t mean that you can’t deviate away from these lists.  After all, the lists you made today will be different in six months, a year, five years and so on.

A Brief Look at YouTube

We all know what YouTube’s niche is: video sharing.  When I first discovered YouTube, like 8 years ago now, it was mostly to watch music videos from what I can recall.  Now, however, you can find videos of practically anything.

What’s great about YouTube is that one can is it for vlogging.  For example, ThePhilOfIt used it to essentially vlog day-to-day stuff.  ThePhileOfIt had a nice mixture of videos that where funny and some that weren’t.

And then there’s the fact that YouTube has become a way to discover makeup tutorials.  Like when CoverGirl came out with its Hunger Games Capitol Collection, they had brief tutorials on how to achieve the looks.

YouTube has also become a way to share videos of parodies of famous songs.  I know that the Harlem Shake has a had a couple of different versions pop up from Bemidji State University.   Not to mention I recall several parodies of “Call Me Maybe” show up.
