What’s the deal with NaNoWriMo

For those of you who have seen the buzz around Facebook and Twitter, the abbreviation “NaNoWriMo” has been flying around like no other.  For those of who don’t know what NaNoWriMo is, it’s National Novel Writing Month.

During the month of November, people who partake in NaNoWriMo attempt to write a 50,000 story by 11:59 PM on November 30.

Now, the reason why 50,000 words is that according NaNoWriMo’s stats since 1999, 50,000 words is an achievable goal.  But NaNoWriMo does define a novel as, “a lengthy work of fiction” and lets the author decide if their work is considered a novel or not.

What’s the major benefit is that the NaNoWriMo staff offer different events during the month to help writers reach their goal:
